The Future of Graphic Design

With graduation season in full-swing, many soon-to-be and recent graduates have already begun to search for jobs.  A daunting task – but for those who have already had a chance to prove their skills, this is a time bursting with possibility.  The work of three particularly impressive graphic design students at Mansfield University was recently displayed on campus at Loomis Gallery.  Their product design, packaging and branding concepts can be viewed via the link above each summary.

Berserker
As the craft beer trend in America continues to burgeon the importance of product logos and labeling can't be taken lightly. Berserker brings libation to the next level and has a clear target market and message. Drawing from his Norse familial history, the axe icon speaks for itself (and would be a fantastic bottle opener!) and looks great on a bottle or t-shirt. This conceptual brewery design will even be featured in the up-coming movie Going Up?, currently being filmed in Corning, NY. The force is certainly strong with this one, nice job!

With only two weeks left to submit entry forms, now is the time to explore Elmira and discover all that it has to offer.

Thinking Made Visual

If you haven’t been to the Google homepage today, you should check it out. On this day in history, May 8th 1920, Saul Bass was born in the Bronx, New York. He would grow to become one of America’s most famous graphic designers – best known for his work on movie title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.

Bass is said to have revolutionized the concept of film title sequences with his creative take on The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), North by Northwest (1959), Walk on the Wild Side (1962), and Nine Hours to Rama (1963) – just to name a few. To quote the man himself, Bass strived to “reach for a simple, visual phrase that tells you what the picture is all about and evokes the essence of the story”. His groundbreaking methods inspired the animated openings to Catch Me If You Can, X-Men: First Class, and AMC’s Mad Men.

Brett Powell Behind Bars, Seeks Bail

Brett is locked up

Co-workers agree, it’s for the best.

In an attempt to raise funds for his release, Powell, an employee of Howell Liberatore & Associates, is calling upon friends, family, and colleagues to contribute to the 2013 MDA Lock-Up.

The Lock-Up, held this year on May 21st at the Texas Roadhouse in Elmira, is the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s premier fundraising program. Powell will join other community leaders to help raise critical funds for MDA, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and related diseases. Donations stay in the local community in order to fund research efforts, group support services, healthcare, and child summer camp programs.

In a recent interview Powell stated, “I'm proud that I'm going behind bars to help in the fight against muscle disease. If it’s a crime to care, then by all means, throw away the key!”

Please go to Powell’s personal page (http://www2.mda.org/site/TR?px=1750767&pg=personal&fr_id=5964) to make your tax-deductable donation now, and spread the word to friends and colleagues!

How to Build Your Brand For Less

In today’s economy, it is all about getting the most out of your money.  And it should not be any different when it comes to building your brand.  There are such a wide variety of resources that you have at your disposal so you do not need to spend more money than absolutely necessary.  If you are able to build your brand for less, why spend your money and time on things when you do not have to?

One way to build your brand without spending any money is to have amazing customer service.  Everything does not always go perfectly, so instead of getting aggravated, go over the top.  Your customers are not going to tell their friends about the time that everything went smoothly, because frankly that is expected.  Instead, they will tell their friends about the time that something went wrong but your company went above and beyond to fix the problem to ensure that they, as the customer, were satisfied.
